The 10-campus University of Hawaiʻi System has topped a half a billion dollars in extramural funding for the first time. UH secured $505 million in extramural funding in fiscal year 2022, a 4 percent increase over the previous year. UH Mānoa, the system’s flagship campus and ARCS Honolulu partner university, accounted for $366 million of that.
University research expenditures contribute to the state’s economy through business sales, employee earnings, state tax revenue and job creation while serving as the main component in the diversification of Hawaiʻi’s economy, UH officials note in their news release. School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology Dean Chip Fletcher talks about the impact of research in video accompanying a Hawai‘i News Now report. SOEST is one of six units at the university supported with Honolulu ARCS Scholar Awards.
