Honolulu ARCS Scholar and 2023 ARCS Alumni Hall of Fame inductee Heidi Hammel was among the scientists interviewed for a PBS NewsHour story marking the first anniversary of observations by the James Webb Space Telescope. View the interview on YouTube.
The telescope sees farther — by a few hundred million years — than earlier telescopes, but it was spectroscopy data providing evidence for previously hypothesized solar system chemistry that blew Dr. Hammel away. (At left, courtesy of NASA: JWST image of Uranus, one of the icy planets that have been the focus of her research.)Dr. Hammel will be featured in the next ARCS Forward online program. She will be interviewed by a recent ARCS Scholar alum, Dr. Ori Fox, and ARCS National President Beth Wainwright on Wednesday, September 20 at 6 a.m. HST. Participation is free; watch for registration information. (The discussion will be recorded for later viewing on the national ARCS website.)
