Honolulu Scholar Shares Insights Gleaned from Interstellar Visitor
Astronomers eagerly tracked comet 3I/ATLAS once it was identified less than a year ago as only the third observed object to visit our solar system from interstellar space. 2026 Honolulu ARCS Scholar Willem Hoogendam, a National Science Foundation fellow and fourth-year PhD student in the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa's Institute for Astronomy, shared the story of the object's discovery and what the dirty ball of ice reveals about the star system where it originated.
