The John A. Burns School of Medicine honored Honolulu ARCS member Dr. Mariana Gerschenson for 12 years of remarkable service in the JABSOM dean's office. Mariana served as the inaugural associate dean after stints as director of research and director of graduate education for the University of Hawai‘i's medical school. She returns to faculty as a professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, where she does research on diabetes in the Pacific.
Mariana is credited with raising the medical school's reputation by advancing strategic planning, encouraging innovative thinking, and fostering interdisciplinary and inter-agency collaboration. During her tenure as associate dean, JABSOM saw a 28 percent increase in research awards to more than $60 million in 2024. She has also been an invaluable liaison for the ARCS Honolulu Chapter.
